As a sealant for concrete and metal surfaces, these coatings protect from highly concentrated acids and caustic materials down to hydrocarbon-saturated process wastewater. After properly preparing the surface of the area, our technicians apply the coatings onto the concrete and steel to prevent the contaminated fluid from corroding, eating through, and damaging the concrete and steel — thereby extending the life of your facility infrastructure.
Our Sump and Trench Coating Process
The sump and trench coating application process includes the following steps:
- Site assessment: We first steam clean the area and visually inspect the substrates to evaluate your trench and sump system’s condition. This process also detects possible damage, including deteriorating concrete, cracking, honeycombs, corrosion and other metallurgical damage on steel liners, which could lead to costly contamination cleanup in the area. Assessment will also determine what existing substrate can be reused and what needs to be replaced.
- Concrete waterproofing: Concrete is waterproofed using crystalline products such as Penetron concrete waterproofing systems, and damage due to cracking and honeycombing is fixed to create a uniform surface that will drain correctly.
- Coat application: The recommended coating is applied evenly to seal the concrete and prevent future leaching of contaminated material through any porous areas in the concrete.
- Interstitial space: Space created for fluid to collect if the top layer fails — this can be monitored manually with inspection tubes or electronically with sensors. As per AER-55 guidelines, this is a government-regulated step that stipulates interstitial space monitoring.
- Steel trench inserted: Steel trench is prefabricated to fit the area and designed to slope trenches to sumps.
- Steel trench coating: The steel trench is sandblasted and then coated with the final layer of specialized coating to handle direct, prolonged exposure to the chemicals in the area.
- Leak detection tube installation: We place a leak detection tube to monitor the first layer of containment.
